starting out
Well, here I am beginning this research blog for our DBR class. To begin with I'll explain a little of my research goals as described by Dr. Reeves. I have been interested for some time in some of the principles espoused by DBR, so that is why I am in this class, and I hope to eventually be able to develop a design-based research agenda. But as that is not very realistic in a graduate school setting, my goals for the present are more interpretivistic, and I see myself doing either a qualitative or a mixed-methods study for my dissertation.
I'm still in my first year, so my specific research plans are still developing, but some of the areas I am interested in are blended (online/f2f) settings, and sociocultural theories of learning and cognition. I'm also very interested in more wholistic looks at learning, as Denise and I talked about on one of the WEbCT discussions. For example, I'm interested in looking at factors including but not limited to cognitive factors in learning, such as dispositional/attitudinal/emotional factors. I liked Rogoff's approach (cited in Collins, Joseph, and Bielaczyc's 2004 article) that we should analyze three layers in learning environments: personal layers, interpersonal layers, and the community layer.
Ideally, I would like to do DBR research where I could iteratively look at each of these layers as we developed a design that was well-studied in all of these aspects.
